Welcome back,  to yet another episode of "Grief Untangled: Untangling the Threads of Grief, Healing, and Hope." I'm your host, CoachDD, and I'm here to guide you through the intricate journey of grief.

Today's episode delves into a topic that resonates deeply with the essence of our podcast—Community support in grief.

Grief is a complex and personal journey, and one thing we've learned for sure is that you don't have to go through it all alone. The power of community, friends, and loved ones can make a significant difference in how we navigate this challenging terrain.

But before we dive in, I have an exciting announcement. We have an upcoming webinar called "6 Vital Elements of Grief." In this webinar, we'll explore essential aspects of grief that can help you on your healing journey. Stay tuned until the end of this episode, where I'll share how you can join this webinar for free.

Now, let's get back to today's topic of discussion

Grief often leaves us feeling isolated, lost, and alone. It can be overwhelming, and sometimes, it feels like no one truly understands the pain we're going through. This is where the power of the community steps in.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a unique example. It brought a wave of collective grief, sweeping through communities worldwide. In those challenging times, grief took on a new dimension, making the process even more complex and heart-wrenching. The pandemic forced people to isolate themselves from friends and family, especially during times when human connection was needed the most. The inability to be physically present with loved ones while grieving amplified feelings of loneliness and isolation.

It forced individuals to find new and sometimes unhealthy ways to cope with the profound emotions that accompanied the loss of a loved one and the support of a community at the same time.

Communities, whether they're online or in your local neighbourhood, provide a safe space to express your feelings and experiences. When you share your grief with others, you discover that you're not alone in your struggles.

Friends as a Pillar of Support

Friends are often the first line of support when grief strikes. They know you well and can offer a shoulder to lean on, a listening ear, or simply their comforting presence. Friends remind you that you're cared for and valued.

In my own grieving journey, I was lucky to be supported by friends, families and even colleagues at my workplace.

It's important to lean on your friends during this time, but it's equally vital to communicate your needs. Friends may want to help, but they might not know how. Honest conversations about what you need can help them know and strengthen your friendship at the same time.

The Healing Power of Community

Beyond friends, communities—both physical and virtual—can become a haven of support. They offer a platform to connect with others who are facing similar challenges.

I have myself been a part of an online grief support community and I cannot emphasise enough how beneficial it was during my grieving journey. Grief support communities are quite normal in the West but in India, it is still not that prevalent. As the friends and family support system is much stronger in India we predominantly depended on that. But, things are changing quite radically in metro cities due to the rise in cosmopolitan and nuclear family settings.

Grief support communities provide a non-judgmental space to share your grief openly. When you see others working through their pain and making progress, it can inspire hope in your own journey.

Closing

As we wrap up today's episode, I want to emphasize the incredible strength that community and friends can offer in your grief journey. They can be your pillars of strength, your sounding boards, and your sources of comfort.
